If you want a business that moves, mobilizes, and inspires people, start with the heart.
When you think about the brands that truly excite people, what are some of the companies that come to mind? I think of TOMS, Virgin, and Life is Good to name a few. They all have something in common that is overlooked in traditional business approaches, articles, and marketing. They have a mission far beyond shoes from Argentina, a plane ride, or a t-shirt.
They tap into something much larger. I first heard of TOMS in a Toastmasters group in San Francisco. A group member was so inspired by TOMS that she went on a giving trip to South America to implement TOMS’ mission of One-for-One.
When you create a mission that inspires people so much that they not only want to continually reinvest in your product, they also want to join you in spreading that message, that is when you create real impact.
What is your impact?
With all the noise on the internet and social media, it’s important that your business stands out and adds value. When you tap into a larger mission or goal, even if it’s something as simple as Life is Good’s Spreading Optimism, you connect with people’s hearts. And ultimately, people buy with their hearts, not their heads.
Ask yourself and/or your team:
- What lights you up about the work you/your business does?
- Who can most benefit from your service/product?
- How can you be of service to the community you want to help? What do they crave?
If you’ve been in business for a while, the second two questions are probably familiar to you, but it’s crucial that no matter what stage of business you’re in, that you are clear about what lights you up about your business because if you love what you do and who you provide it to, you will always have energy and clients.
If you’re having trouble with any of these questions or would like to discuss further, reach out and say hello!

Love this post! When a business and it’s leadership are genuinely committed to a cause their org supports, it can be catalytic!
